Have you been wondering how...
to decide which instructional framework is right for your program?
In the garden of Dual Language Education, there are LOTS of options to choose from – SIOP, the Biliteracy Unit Framework, Literacy Squared, the Translanguaging Unit Plan, GLAD,... the list goes on and on!
We say to start by looking beneath the surface to the common instructional roots and soil that all of these approaches share. We will teach you how!
Questions we will answer:
-
- How can I help my students develop language proficiency and learn subject matter at the same time?
- How can I help my students understand the material? How can I help increase their comprehension of what they hear and read?
- How can I help my students speak and write more in the language of instruction?
- How can I help my students connect what they're learning to their background experiences and the material that we've already studied?
- How can I help my students understand the building blocks of language and how they are the same or different in English and the partner language?
- How can I make sure that my classroom is a welcoming and affirming space for my students and their families? How can I make sure that the curricular materials, instructional strategies, and assessment practices promote equitable outcomes for my students?
We'll also talk about...
- how to differentiate instruction for students at different levels of language proficiency;
- how to make sure that the same kinds of supports are offered to students during instructional time in both English and the partner language; and
- how to engage in co-planning with a partner.
